The annual NSW Cross Country Championships was held at Upjohn Park, Rydalmere on the 3rd of August 2013. Upjohn Park is located within the area of Homart Pharmaceuticals Pty. Ltd. Homart endeavors to support this meaningful event every year. On the day of the 2013 NSW Short Cross Country Championships, Homart’s Operations Manager Mr. Jeffery YEH, member of Parramatta City Council Mr. John HUGH joined Mr. Jeff HUNT, the Australian marathon athlete in 2012 London Olympic Games as honored guests to the competition and presented at the subsequent award ceremony for the winners.
The NSW Cross Country Championship has had a long history. The event is hosted by the NSW Cross-Country Runner Club. As one of the grand events of the NSW Sports Federation, this event aims to encourage citizens to participate in and enjoy outdoor activities. This competition also serves the purpose of training athletes in winter for the coming summer competitions. Some athletes that have won the NSW Marathon Championships went on to represent Australia in global events. The competition has male and female groups, and welcomes all participants ranging from 10 to 60 years old. There are different start times for competitors to suit the different needs for different people with different physical conditions, so all the participants are able to finish around the same time. As a result, this was an outdoor event suitable for all family members to take part in.
Over a hundred professional athletes join this event every year. Among the participants, there have been many famous runners from the former national team, such as Dave POWER, who won the Bronze medal for the 10 km event in the 1960 Rome Olympic Games, runner up in the 1962 Perth Sports Games, as well as John FARRIGNTON, the winner of the 1972 Czech Marathon competition. Mr. Jeffrey HUNT who attended the London Olympic Games as an Australian marathon athlete also participated in the competition last year. This year, Mr. HUNT was invited as an honoured guest at the award ceremony.
