In Australia, the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) is a non for profit organisation which sends doctors and nurses by plane to remote areas to provide emergency services and medical relief to the injured and sick. They fly more than 70 thousand kilometres every day. Every year, they rescue and assist with 4500 emergency cases, provide first aid services and deliver thousands of emergency patients to hospitals from remote areas. Some of their stories include saving a couple from a car accident in the quiet western desert, and hovering a plane over 10 thousands meters high in the sky, for an emergency baby delivery. Their achievements are countless and numerous.
The RFDS needs over $10 million Australian dollars every year to continue its operations. They need sponsorship and support from the society. The RFDS Outback Car Trek is a non for profit charity with 24 years of history. It volunteers in the donation for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Team members in the RFDS Outback Car Trek are from Australia, New Zealand, U.S, India, China, Hong Kong, Middle East, U.K and other countries in Europe. Over its 24 years, the Outback Car Trek has collected up to AUD $20 million for the RFDS. In 2012, they successfully collected AUD $1.6 million. These donations are used for flight maintenance, expanding the medical emergency coverage area and enhancing emergency services in remote areas.
